Tohopekaliga (Palm)

Tohopekaliga (Palm) by Joyclam, acrylic on canvas, 48" x 24"

2017

acrylic on canvas

48" x 24"

I visited Florida for the first time in 2016, and was inspired by the lines of the palm trees - I could literally see brushstrokes as I strolled along the docks of Lake Tohopekaliga. I went home and bought a canvas and brush immediately. I started sketching it out while volunteering at a local art museum, and it felt like my artist dreams were finally coming true.

And then Lyme Disease unleashed its fury, and it would be an interstate move, a diagnosis, and a few rounds of antibiotics later that I would finally get to start painting. A bright yellow basecoat carried the Florida sunshine through the winter of 2017, while the same shade of Mepron was staining my mouth in the fight against Babesiosis. Things went downhill from there, and as treatment and symptoms intensified over the next 3 years, there were plenty of times I doubted I'd ever paint again.

But just like the mighty palms bending in the fury of a hurricane, I didn't break after all. I see the sun again.
